Tirana was our first destination to kick off our world travel journey! We spent 6 weeks in this city and fell in love. We learned the ins and outs, best eats, and ideal areas to stay. So, let’s get started!
Where to Stay
First, where to stay? Here are the areas that we recommend:
BLLOKU
Popular for its trendy atmosphere, with plenty of cafes, shops, and nightlife
SKANDERBEG SQUARE
Historical, close to landmarks like the National Museum and the Opera
Pazari i ri
This area offers a mix of traditional markets and modern conveniences
Ultimately, it depends on your preferences, whether you prefer a lively atmosphere or a more relaxed setting.
Wherever you choose to stay, it’s good to know that Tirana is a very walkable city! For instance, a stroll from the vibrant Blloku district to Skanderbeg Square, the heart of the city, would typically take around 15 to 20 minutes. Exploring the cozy Pazari i Ri area and heading to the bustling Block is a leisurely walk of about 10 to 15 minutes. Tirana’s compact layout makes it convenient for pedestrians to navigate between these key spots, allowing you to soak in the city’s charm on foot.
Day 1
Morning
Start your day with a visit to Skanderbeg Square, surrounded by historical landmarks like the National History Museum and Et’hem Bey Mosque. While there, climb the clock tower (aka pigeon tower)! It’s a fun experience and the views at the top are worth the climb. Remember to carry cash with you, as most places do not accept cards.
Afternoon
Head to the Grand Park for a relaxing afternoon surrounded by nature, visit the Artificial Lake, and enjoy a picnic or a boat ride. Make this a morning activity if you’re up for a walk! The Tirana Artificial Lake trail, also known as the “Lana e Liqenit” trail, is approximately 2 miles (around 3.2 kilometers) in length.
evening
Dive into Tirana’s culinary scene with dinner in the Pazari i Ri area, offering a mix of traditional and modern eateries. If you’re searching for traditional Albanian cuisine, Oda is a must!
Day 2
Morning
Discover the Bunk’Art 2 museum, housed in a massive underground bunker, providing insights into Albania’s history.
Afternoon
Immerse yourself in art at the National Gallery of Arts and then take a stroll around the vibrant New Bazaar area.
evening
Wrap up your 2-day adventure with dinner at Tirana Castle (aka Fortress of Justinian), soaking in the serene, yet lively atmosphere and array of restaurants, shops, and treats.

get-around
Transportation
Walking is the best way to get around the city, but you can also grab a taxi. The best app to download is Speed Taxi or Ups Taxi. You can expect to pay between $3-$7 per taxi ride. Buses are another means of transportation but be prepared to be packed like a can of sardines. I would not recommend this method. However, it is quite affordable!
